To test this, they used a robot to hit balls with mud on different partsβright, left, top, bottom, front, and back. They found that:

Mud on the ball also caused the ball to travel shorter distances.
When the mud was on the back or bottom of the ball, the ball traveled even shorter because the club hit the mud before hitting the ball, reducing energy transfer.
